Thăm Guyanne -thăm ba hòn đảo

Nói tới Guyanne phải nói tới Đảo Quỷ với người tù khổ sai Papillon ,theo nghĩa tiếng Pháp là con bướm ,hình chạm trổ trên ngực Henri Charniere .Ba hòn đảo này nằm trong Quần đảo Salut ,nay  thuộc quyền quản lý cùa Cơ  quan Không gian CNES .Hiện nay có dịch vụ thuyền buồm catamaran cùa hai hãng :Houette và Tropic Azes đưa người ra chơi đảo với giá khoảng 48-49,6 Eur cho một chuyến đi một ngày.Îles du Salut ,tiếng Anh là Islands of Salvation-Quần đảo Cứu Rỗi ,vì các nhà truyền giáo từng đã phải chạy ra đây để tránh bệnh dịch hạch trên đất liền và đôi khi người ta gọi nhầm thành Safety Islands tức quần đảo An toàn gồm những hòn đảo nhỏ có nguồn gốc từ núi lửa tạo thành ,nằm phía Bắc Kourou khoảng 14 km trên Đại Tây Dương .Từ Bắc xuống Nam có ba hòn đó là Île du Diable , Île Royale và Île Saint-Joseph,trong đó nổi tiếng nhất là Đảo Quỷ 
Île du Diable, nơi đã cầm tù viên thuyền trưởng Alfred Dreyfus ,cái đảo mà người Anh gọi là Devil's Island.Cả ba đảo có diện tích tổng cộng 0,62 km² tức 62 héc ta ,trong đó rộng và cao nhất là đảo Royale (28 ha và cao 66 mét) ,đảo Quỷ (14 ha và 40 mét) và đảo  Saint-Joseph (20 ha và 30 mét) .Quần đảo

The islands were part of a notorious penal colony from 1852 onwards for only the worst criminals of France. The main part of the penal colony was a labor camp stretched along the border with Dutch Guiana, which today is Surinam. Île Royale was for the general population of the worst criminals of the penal colony to roam about in moderate freedom due to the difficulty of escape from the island. Île Saint-Joseph was for the worst of those criminals to be punished in solitary confinement in silence and for extra punishment in darkness of the worst of the worst criminals of the penal colony. Île du Diable was for political prisoners, including Dreyfus in 1895-1899 after his conviction in metropolitan France for treason.

This penal colony for the very worst criminals of France was controversial for it had a reputation for harshness and brutality. Prisoner upon prisoner violence was common, tropical diseases would kill many others, and a small core of broken survivors would return to France to tell how horrible it was and scare other potential criminals straight. This system was gradually phased out and has been completely shut down since 1953. Nowadays the islands are a popular tourist destination. The islands were featured in the novel Papillon, by Henri Charrière. He was imprisoned here for 9 years. Joseph Conrad's short story An Anarchist (1906) is largely set in the Îles du Salut.

Île Royale (Royal Island) is the largest and westernmost island of the threeÎles du Salut, in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of French Guiana. As the largest island, with an area of 28 hectares, it was used as the centre for administration when the islands were used as a penal settlement. With an elevation of 66 metres, the island is the highest of the group. It contains a museum and a hotel (l'Auberge des Îles du Salut) as well as an optical and infrared tracking site that supports space launches from the nearby Kouroufacility.
